And there it ends. I must assume that Miss Webster hid the letter away, intending to finish it, and then forgot — or perhaps could not find the words for what she wished to express.

I puzzled over this letter all day, wondering at those crossings-out, the thoughts that trailed off into nothing. By the time class let out, I had decided to use the envelope to contact Miss Webster myself, simply crossing out the “Mrs. Frederick” and adding “Miss Amelia” above it. The letter I wrote was brief, saying only that I am the new teacher here in Lowry Bridge, that I have witnessed strange things during my time here too — though I was careful not to mention any particulars — and that I am curious about the circumstances that led her to leave Lowry Bridge. I asked, too, about that ominous inscription from Agatha’s book, what it said when it called to her.

I managed to smuggle this letter out to the pile left on the table by the back door for the postman, hidden snugly between a letter bill and one of Mrs. Grier’s dutiful missives to her sister. Hopefully Miss Webster will send a reply and my curiosity will be at least a little sated.

I received a letter from Father today. More sermonizing, more admonishments, more commands. I cast it directly into the stove with the rest of the kindling. I do not think I shall reply.
